The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was one of three market based mechanisms created under the Kyoto Protocol.  The CDM allows emission reduction (or emission elimination) projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each of which is equivalent to 1 tonne of CO2.  These CERs can be traded and sold, and used by industrialised countries to meet their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.

In addition to emission reductions, CDM encourages sustainable development in developing countries giving more development nations flexibility in how they meet their emission reduction targets.  These projects typically include renewable energy projects like large scale hydropower schemes and wind farms, providing a sustainable alternative to energy generation from fossil fuel consumption.

For clients interested in purchasing CER credits co2balance is able to purchase and retire them on behalf of clients, ensuring that the certified emission reductions are not double counted and the carbon reductions are made.

Prices of CERs change on a regular basis reflecting foreign exchange movements and the carbon market price of CERs.
